We leave from Cusco early in the morning by private transport. Approx. at 5:30 we will arrive after 4 hours in Cachora (2,900m), a typical Andean town where we meet the rest of our trekking team. After a well deserved breakfast we start a two-hour trek to Capuliyoc (2,915m). On the way we get our first views of the Apurimac Valley stretching below and of the snow-capped peaks of Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora (5,482m). Afterwards we descend through the eastern slopes of the Andes to reach Coca Masana (2,330m). The temperature becomes higher and the flora and fauna begin to change. Finally we arrive at Playa Rosalina (Rosalina Beach) at 1,550m, where we camp beside the raging Apurimac River.
Again we get up very early to start, after the breakfast, our walk to reach Maranpata or Choquequirao after middday. We will reach the archaeological site and we get to know it step by step, the great ability and intelligence which had the people who constructed this vestige which makes us seeing again the glorious time of Inca empire.
Admiring the beauty and with our heads full of ideas, we observe dauntless the condors flying, which around 3 p.m. appear in area of Choquequirao when they fly to higher zones.
Later we take a route to Raqaypata where we camp and after dinner we pass the night.
This day we will dedicate ourselves exclusively to enjoy all the magic of history and splendor of Choquequirao, with a guided visit and time to know whole the site with its 8 sectors, like barns, houses temples and also we will observe the three levels of the excavated ruins of this late Inca-town, like the ruin in progress of excavation and finally unexplored areas that can tell us about this last refuge of the oppressed inca empire terraces. Again, like in the morning this afternoon we have the opportunity to enjoy the majestic flight of condors which with big luck will pass very close to you. In the afternoon we will return to our campsite to have our lunch and then rest and enjoy the quietness of Choquequirao.
In the morning after having breakfast, we will get ready to come back by the same pathway that we had walked the previous days to get Choquequirao; from this fourth day we will walk back to Capuliyoc the beginning of the trail, thus we will leave the place to walk downhill until reaching the Playa Rosalina, where we will take a little break, we will then to walk uphill to get to Chiquiska where we will have lunch, in the afternoon we will keep hiking for about 2 hours to get to the Cocamasana, which is the fourth campsite, from this camp we will have amazing vistas of the Apurimac canyon. In the evening we will have tea time, subsequently dinner. All meals included.
We will wake up very early in the morning to leave the last campsite, that way not to be hit by the sun heat, after a couple of hours hiking uphill, we will arrive at the viewpoint of Capuliyoc from where we will have the last views of the side of majestic Choquequirao and the great canyon of Apurimac. At this place, we will have our last lunch with our Terra Quechua Peru crew, and we will say goodbye to our muleteers, cooks, and horses. Next, we will drive for about 4 hours to the Ollantaytambo train station, from where we will take the train at 7:05 pm to Machu Picchu Pueblo, the train journey is for 1 hour and 45 minutes. Once in Machu Picchu Pueblo, we will get to our hotel. All meals included, except dinner.
Today a great breakfast at the hotel makes us ready for a full morning exploration of Machu Picchu on a private tour with your Trek Leader. We’ll take the bus back to Machu Picchu early in the morning for an amazing tour until 12:00 pm (Machu Picchu permits will issue for the first group which is from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm).

Hiking pants and T-shirts are recommended during the day, eventually complemented by sweaters, fleeces and jackets in the evening. We recommend convertible hiking pants and / or shorts as some parts of the route run at low altitude and warm weather. It is also very convenient to have light raingear available in the daypack (rain poncho or jacket and/or rain pants) as the weather changes easily and rains can suddenly occur. At night, warm clothing is required along the route. The rest of necessary implements are included in the “What we recommend that you bring” list.
Cusco’s climate is divided into two differentiated seasons: the rainy season, from November to April (the heaviest rainfalls occurring usually between January – March); and the dry season, from May to October. The dry season is colder, so temperatures can drop to below 0 degrees at night.
Along the route to Choquequirao, temperatures range from 15-25ºC during the day if it’s sunny, to 10-20ºC during the day if not sunny. Temperatures drop in the evening and at night, especially in Choquequirao, at a higher elevation, reaching 5ºC although rarely below. Warm clothes are hence however necessary for this hike.
Very Challenging: The route has steep ups and downs, with changes of altitude in one day of over 1600m/5200ft and usually warm weather during the day due to the lower altitude in Cusco. We recommend allowing one-day acclimatization in Cusco prior to the trek departure.
